It has become a habit for David Alonso to lead the Moto3 World Championship practices and that’s exactly what happened this morning in the free session of the Catalunya GP.
As usual, the first few minutes were marked by constant changes at the top, as the riders gained pace. Alonso (CFMoto Gaviota Aspar) was the first to complete a flying lap, but was soon overtaken by Collin Veijer (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP).
Although he returned to the lead, Alonso only managed to consolidate his position after 11 minutes. He improved twice until, 15 minutes later, he was beaten by José Antonio Rueda (Red Bull KTM Ajo). The Spanish rider held the position for two minutes, before Iván Ortolá (MT Helmets-MSi/KTM) reached the top.
In the last five minutes, Alonso made a sequence of two fast laps to definitively take the lead. He was the only one to lap in 1m46s, setting a new lap record: 1m46.838s. Ortolá finished second 0.300s behind, with Rueda in third. Ryusei Yamanaka (MT Helmets-MSi/KTM) and Veijer completed the top five.
