The new MotoGP rules, which will come into effect in 2027, were officially presented last Friday. It was the result of about two years of work, in a regulatory framework aimed at making motorcycles safer, more accessible, more sustainable, and improving the quality of races.
Hervé Poncharal, president of the IRTA teams association, said in a press conference that he is confident in the positive impact of the new rules, also praising the process by which they were defined:
– I believe that these regulations were the desires of the majority of the paddock actors, starting with the riders, the fans. And I believe we have met almost all the requirements, because we had enough time to discuss, enough time to convince everyone and everything was adopted unanimously, which is great. I also believe it will create more interest in the championship because it could also work as a leveling of the field since at the moment some manufacturers are having more difficulties than others and clearly from 2027… I don’t want to say we will start from scratch, but it’s not far off. So, I think it will be an interesting season.
There are still two more seasons with the current generation of bikes, which according to the leader of Red Bull GasGas Tech3 will also serve as a prelude to an exciting new era: ‘We have 2025 and 2026 with the current bikes that are excellent prototypes – perhaps the most powerful in the history of motorcycle racing. But also during these two years we will see the preparation that will be required for what will happen from 2027. Clearly it should help the race itself, overtaking should be easier, the sport will be more sustainable. The fact that we have reduced some things, all devices, except one engine, can also help teams maintain an affordable rental rate to be paid to the factories. So, overall, I think from the perspective of an independent team this is a advantageous situation for everyone that we will face from 2027, I believe‘.
Finally, Poncharal stated: ‘I am really happy and I am also really happy that we have responded to the requests of the riders who are our heroes and they told us “we are at the limit of what the human body can handle”. I think this is the answer and the best technical and physical answer we could give them‘.
