Nostalgia is something that many brands are taking advantage of nowadays, especially when it comes to the automotive and motorcycle world. If there’s one thing that the past few years have proven, it’s that a retro style will always be in fashion. In fact, we don’t have to look very far, as the motorcycles we know are proof of that. For example, retro-inspired motorcycles like those from Triumph and Royal Enfield are experiencing continuous sales growth.
Therefore, even new players are capitalizing on nostalgia to sell their products. Tozz, an electric mobility company based in Turkey, is all about urban mobility. They have a selection of retro-themed electric scooters, such as the Pipegun Original and the Pipegun Sixteen. Recently, they entered the world of electric motorcycles with the debut of the Joyce’90, a two-wheeled electric motorcycle inspired by retro design, paying homage to one of the greatest decades ever – the 90s.
Right off the bat, the Joyce’90 resembles a particular motorcycle: the Honda Cub EZ90. Needless to say, Tozz’s Joyce’90 is clearly inspired by the Cub EZ90, as well as several other mini-motorcycles from the past, and certainly makes one wish that Honda would make an electric version of the Cub, Monkey, and Grom.
With the Tozz Joyce’90, which is expected to go into production in March 2024, it is likely to be the closest we can get to a modern and electric version of the Cub EZ90. It also has some interesting features, such as a pop-up headlight, an integrated boombox with Bluetooth connectivity, and of course, its retro-inspired fairing. However, an article from DesignBoom states that the motorcycle will be road legal in Europe and will be classified as an electric bicycle. This may mean that its power will be limited to 250 nominal watts.
Although 250 watts may not seem like much, it is likely that the Joyce’90 will be producing much more in operation. As we have seen in some high-performance e-bikes, the nominal power is indeed 250 watts, but the peak power can easily be double, or sometimes even more. For example, the motor of the Bosch Performance Line CX Race e-bike reaches a peak of 600 watts, despite having a nominal power of 250 watts.
Other features of the Joyce’90 include robust and dual-function tires mounted on 20-inch rims. The front and rear suspensions ensure a comfortable ride, as well as some off-road capability. As mentioned earlier, it is expected to go into production in March 2024 and will be built at Joyce Teknoloji facilities in Ankara, Turkey. Based on the images from the Tozz website, it appears that the Joyce’90 will be offered in a wide variety of colors, all inspired by the vibrant aesthetics of the 90s.
