John Dodds, who competed in the World Motorcycle Speed Championships between the 1960s and 1970s, has passed away. He was Australian and 80 years old.
He made his debut in the World Championships in 1966 at the German GP in the 500cc category, but also competed in a race in the 250cc category that year: the Isle of Man TT. His first podium finish was third place at the Spanish GP in the 500cc category in 1968, while his first victory came in the 125cc category at the German GP in 1970.
In 1971, Dodds competed for the last time in the premier class, 500cc, but in the following years he achieved notable results in the lower displacement categories. The highlight was finishing third overall in the 250cc World Championship in 1973. He ended his career in 1978 in the same category.
In addition to the World Championships, the former rider who has now passed away also competed in the inaugural season of the European Formula 750 in 1973, finishing as the runner-up behind… Barry Sheene. A year later, he won the title in the same championship.
The Motorcycle Sports extends heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and friends of John Dodds.
