At the end of January, Franco Morbidelli suffered a serious accident while training at the Algarve International Circuit with a production motorcycle. He had a small blood clot in his head and could only return to action last weekend at the Qatar MotoGP Grand Prix.
This is not the first serious accident to occur at the track that hosts the Portuguese GP – notably Pol Espargaró’s in last year’s edition. When asked if there should be changes in Portimão due to this history, Morbidelli said:
– Portimão is a rollercoaster, it’s a unique track and can be very dangerous at times. But it’s a lot of fun and very dangerous, just like this sport. There have been some updates to the gravel, but I have never in my life touched the gravel in Portimão. I swear. Even last time was enough, I didn’t touch the gravel – I only hit the asphalt very hard with my head.
