Pirelli is going through a unique phase in its motorsport history and is preparing to supply tyres to MotoGP in 2027. This means it will have under its belt not only the premier class but also Moto2, Moto3, MotoE, the Superbike World Championship, MXGP motocross, Formula 1 and World Rally Championship (WRC).

Giorgio Barbier, Pirelli’s Moto Racing Director, was asked by GPOne.com how the idea of stepping into MotoGP came about: ‘Some things mature over time. Certainly, creating tyre control in Superbike was the first building block’, he began.

The Italian went on: ‘From there, other opportunities arose, Formula 1, and now MotoGP. So, history helps us; we started with MiniGP a few years ago just to get into GP from the ground up. From there, we worked with the young riders in Supersport 300 and the R3 Cup with entry-level bikes that aren’t too expensive. Clearly, entering the Talent Cup and JuniorGP in Spain was a consequence’.

According to Barbier, the progression turned out to be a process that unfolded naturally: ‘Entering Moto2 and Moto3 followed the same path, so moving to MotoGP was natural. In this world, sometimes things happen by chance, one day a light turns on, and you look at things differently’.
