It was almost impossible for Óscar Gutierrez to start the season with victory in the first race of the category at the French GP. Rich in incidents, the rider was always the clearest, with Eric Granado being hit by Raffaele Fusco’s bike, in an incident that led to a red flag and the race being cut short.

Everything was in place for the start of the MotoE race, the first of the year, with Le Mans hosting this season opener in almost perfect conditions.

Mattia Casadei dominates MotoE Race 2 in Le Mans and takes championship lead

Alessandro Zaccone started from pole position, with Eric Granado second and Oscar Gutierrez third.

The start saw Gutierrez in the spotlight, with the MSI Racing Team rider taking the lead straight away, with Granado second and Zaccone third. Andrea Mantovani was fourth and Lorenzo Baldassarri fifth.

Shortly afterwards, and still during the first lap, disaster struck Granado as he crashed, and in double figures: the Brazilian had just got up and was hit by the bike of Raffaele Fusco, who also went down in the same corner:

Unsurprisingly, after the incident at turns 9 and 10, the race was red-flagged. Granado was being carried off the track on a stretcher. Scary! The good news is that all the riders were conscious.

The eight-lap race was halved to eight laps, with the restart scheduled for 12.25pm local time. Fusco, meanwhile, was left out of the restart as his bike was unable to return to the track.

Meanwhile, it was confirmed that Granado was going to the circuit’s medical center to be seen by the organization’s medical team.

At the restart Gutierrez was fastest and gaining ground on Mantovani, Zaccone was third, Kevin Zannoni fourth and Baldassarri fifth.

On the following lap Matteo Ferrari, the category’s first champion, also confirmed his disastrous start to the championship by crashing, fortunately without gravity. The Italian lost the front of his bike at turn 10.

Mantovani was trying to get close to Gutierrez and set the fastest lap so far in the race, in 1:39.736s, and narrowed the gap to Gutierrez to 0.2s, but the #99 held firm and then increased his lead again to close to two-three tenths.

Tommaso Occhi also went down and ended his race prematurely.

The race ended shortly afterwards with Gutierrez confirming victory in dominating fashion at Le Mans, with Mantovani second and Zaccone third.
