Nicolò Bulega dominated the World Superbike opener by securing his first triple victory in the category at Phillip Island. With an overwhelming pace, he crossed the finish line with a comfortable 2.6-second advantage over the competition. At the opposite end of the grid, defending champion Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) had a weekend to forget, eventually retiring from the race due to mechanical problems.

The Italian from (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) demonstrated relentless efficiency throughout the weekend, and after test sessions at the same circuit that already foreshadowed his potential, the Italian confirmed his superiority by winning all races of the opening round.

Álvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) also shone at Phillip Island by recovering from 11th position on the grid, a result of a disappointing Tissot Superpole Race. With aggressive riding, he climbed to second place on the podium. Andrea Iannone (Team Pata Go Eleven), who started from second position, secured third place, consolidating his return to competition with a second podium of the weekend.

In the battle between independent riders, Scott Redding (MGM Bonovo Racing) and Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team) staged an intense duel for fourth position. Redding prevailed, finishing ahead of Petrucci, who completed the top 5. British rider Sam Lowes (ELF Marc VDS Racing Team) also maintained his good form by securing sixth place, following an impressive fifth place in the Superpole Race.

Andrea Locatelli (Pata Maxus Yamaha) was again the best Yamaha representative, finishing in seventh position, repeating the result from the first race. Bimota, recently integrated into the championship, saw both its riders finish in the top 10, with Alex Lowes in eighth and Axel Bassani in tenth. In between, Yari Montella (Barni Spark Racing Team) finished ninth in a tight finish, just 0.022 seconds behind Lowes.

Toprak Razgatlioglu had a complicated weekend, accumulating difficulties with the new BMW M 1000 RR. The Turk was penalized for irresponsible riding after an aggressive maneuver on Danilo Petrucci and, on lap 12, was forced to retire from the race due to mechanical problems.

Another notable retirement was that of Remy Gardner (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team), who crashed on the straight named after his father, Wayne Gardner, with just four laps to go. Tarran Mackenzie (PETRONAS MIE Honda Racing Team) also saw his race end prematurely after an accident at Turn 6.

With this triple victory, Bulega made a strong statement and shows how he is one of the biggest candidates for the final victory this season. Bautista showed resilience in recovering to finish on the podium, while Razgatlioglu will need to find solutions to BMW’s technical challenges if he wants to defend his title.
