After the Repsol Honda hypothesis fell through, Fermín Aldeguer’s future may well lie in MotoGP but at the helm of a Desmosedici. The Mooney VR46 Racing Team seems to be emerging as the main candidate for hiring the rider, but there are other names on the table.
Still without official confirmation, everything indicates that the agreement is closed between Honda and Luca Marini, leaving a spot open in MotoGP in Valentino Rossi’s team.
About two days ago, Uccio Salucci admitted that #10 is unlikely to be with the team next year, and even mentioned being interested in securing a rider for the vacancy from Moto2: ‘When you lose a rider like Marini in November, it’s difficult. We have to discuss and talk to different teams. Our option is not just Aldeguer, there are more riders and teams. Tony Arbolino is an option. I like Tony, he is fast and Italian. He’s another name, but not the only one. We’ll see in the next 4 days’.
The director of the Italian team even spoke about the alleged interest of Pramac in the 18-year-old from Beta Tools SpeedUp, in words to Sky, while also ensuring that there has already been an initial inquiry from Valentino Rossi’s structure: ‘Pramac’s interest in Aldeguer? I understand them very well. He is talented. I regret talking about a rider who has a contract with another team, it is not our style, but this also happens in sports. For now, we have only had a conversation, soon we may get to the heart of the discussions’.
The rider himself spoke to DAZN about the alleged interest, which is not news to him: ‘I heard it is a possible option, but nothing is decided yet. It does not only depend on me, on my decision, but also on the decision of my current team and Mooney VR46’.
What is certain is that with only one spot currently open in MotoGP, everything indicates that it will be taken by Aldeguer, leaving in doubt the future of Fabio Di Giannantonio in the class, who has been one of the standout riders over the past two rounds (including the Qatar GP).
