For the first time, an individual who is not a rider will become a MotoGP Legend. This is Mike Trimby, who dedicated himself to the championship in various roles, playing a fundamental role in making MotoGP what it is today.
It was as the founder and chief executive of IRTA [team association] that Trimby stood out the most. The entity was created in 1986, under his leadership, after riders had asked him to act as their representative in 1982.
Prior to that, Trimby – who passed away in September last year – was a rider and mechanic, starting his career in the 1960s. Together with his wife Irene, at IRTA, he was instrumental in making progress in terms of safety, as well as the tripartite collaboration with FIM and Dorna Sports – giving a voice to teams and riders.
Trimby’s induction into the MotoGP Hall of Fame, officially becoming a MotoGP Legend, will take place next August during the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
The CEO of Dorna Sports, Carmelo Ezpeleta, stated: ‘Mike’s contribution to the Grand Prix is truly monumental, and we are proud to name him a MotoGP Legend. Since the MotoGP Legends concept was born, it has always been about more than just numbers. There are no criteria based solely on race wins or number of titles, it’s about the contribution to the sport – whether off the track, on the track, or a combination of both. Therefore, it is fitting that Mike becomes the first figure honored purely for his off-track impact, as his work in this sport has been truly unique. It will be an honor for us, and for me, to induct Mike into the Hall of Fame. His absence is deeply felt, and we compete in his memory‘.
Mike Trimby’s widow, Irene, commented: ‘Mike would have been very honored to receive this prestigious award, and those who knew him know he would never have expected it. It’s wonderful for his work and legacy to be recognized in this way, although I’m sure he would also have been a bit embarrassed to see us at a ceremony giving him a trophy! It’s also very special for me, for all those who worked alongside him, and for all those who continue to miss him greatly. Thank you very much‘.
