Marc Márquez’s last MotoGP title dates back to 2019, a season he completely dominated with 12 wins and 18 podiums in 19 races. Now, the Repsol Honda rider faces a much worse scenario, entering the final three rounds of this season with only one podium.
Questioned by the Crash.net website about whether he would be able to achieve the same lap times as in 2019 if he had the same equipment now, the Spaniard replied: ‘It’s a good question, if I would be able to achieve the same lap times. I think so. It’s true that my physical condition is very similar to 2019 at the moment. I feel good, although in 2019 I had a very good season, I had difficulties with my shoulder. When I finished the season, I had shoulder surgery. So, at the moment, physically I feel good‘.
However, Márquez admitted that psychologically in terms of confidence he is not at the same level as in 2019: ‘In mental terms, I am not the same. I am more mature, but at the moment less confident on track. Why? Because we are facing more difficulties and during that period [2019] I was winning almost every weekend, or fighting for the podium. So you have a lot of confidence in yourself. Now, after a difficult moment in which you think you performed well, but the results never came, you do not have the same confidence. But we are working on that‘.
