The Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup season started last weekend at the Jerez Ángel Nieto Circuit. In two intense and closely fought races, Marco Morelli and Álvaro Carpe were the winners.
The pole position for both races was taken by Máximo Quiles. In the first race, Brian Uriarte made the holeshot and led towards the first corner. However, the advantage didn’t last long, as there were constant overtakes. Morelli took the lead for the first time with 11 laps to go.
The front group would eventually be reduced to five riders later in the race, and it was Morelli who came out on top in a closely fought battle that was decided by a photo-finish: Valentin Perrone finished second just 0.029s behind. Quiles finished third, with Carpe in fourth and Rico Salmela in fifth. Uriarte was sixth, 13.598s off the lead.
As for the second race, it was even more exciting. Uriarte once again led towards the first corner, and once again there were constant position changes at the front. The front group was larger than in the first race.
In fact, the top nine finished within less than seven seconds of each other. In a breath-taking battle until the end, Carpe took the victory, beating Hakim Danish in a photo-finish by just 0.006s. Uriarte finished third, 0.074s behind, with the podium finishers almost glued together at the end. Quiles was fourth, Salmela fifth, and Morelli crossed the line in sixth after his win the day before.
