Just over two years ago, Suzuki announced the end of its MotoGP program in a completely unexpected way at the end of the 2022 season. At that time, the Hamamatsu manufacturer was able to fight for victories, having been the champion with Joan Mir in 2020.
The project was apparently solid, with experienced team manager Livio Suppo at the helm – who had been hired months before the surprising and radical decision.
At the time, the reasons for the departure were never clear, and even today they remain unexplained. Marco Lucchinelli, who was the 500cc champion with Suzuki in 1981, admitted to the site GPOne.com that he continues to regret and not understand the end of the MotoGP project at the time it happened:
– It’s a shame also because when Suzuki makes an effort, they always do things well, they are very good. When they decided to stop in MotoGP, it was at the time when they had a bike with which they could win the World Championship, and that bothered me a lot. Even now I don’t know what the real reason is, because I see it as something very strange. They were at their peak, so I honestly don’t understand.
