With ten laps to go in the Sprint race of the Spanish GP, Marco Bezzecchi was involved in an accident with Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM) and Francesco Bagnaia – which resulted in the fall and retirement of the Ducati man.
The Pertamina Enduro VR46 rider was hit by Bagnaia during that incident and, after the race, explained the events: ‘I watched the replay because at that moment I only heard a big crash behind me. What happened was that Brad tried to overtake Marc in the last corner, he lost grip as soon as he accelerated, so he was very slow on the outside. Pecco was on the left, I was on the right, and Binder was in the middle. Pecco overtook him completely on the straight and I almost overtook him completely‘.
Regarding his overtaking attempt, Bezzecchi defended: ‘I was strong on the brakes, so I tried to overtake him and I passed them both. I just went a bit wide, but I think I could finish the overtaking move, because in that corner even if you go wide you have the big curb and there’s not much space to try to give back the position. Then, I just heard a big crash‘.
Refusing to pass judgment on what happened, #72 added: ‘I watched the replay, and Brad touched Pecco, and Pecco unfortunately was between me and him, and couldn’t do anything to avoid me. What can I say? I don’t want to express myself, so ask the stewards‘.
