Marc Márquez doubted about his tyre choice: ‘On the sighthing lap I was not sure’

Making the right call between slick or wet tyres was crucial in the main race of the MotoGP French GP – as reflected by a somewhat unexpected final result.

On the sighting lap following the aborted first start attempt, Marc Márquez decided to follow one of his rivals and switch to the bike with slick tyres – none other than his brother Álex (BK8 Gresini/Ducati).

The Ducati Lenovo Spaniard explained in the press conference that, although he made his choices with confidence, he did have doubts at one point:

– In those conditions, I was convinced about my decisions. But it’s true that on the sighting lap I was not sure. I saw Pecco [Bagnaia] went to the grid and then I realised that the track was completely dry. And on that lap, I copied Álex – I waited for him, he went in and I went in with him.

Rain returned, and it was again necessary to consider switching bikes – this time from slicks to wet tyres. And this time, Marc Márquez was the one setting the reference, as he noted: ‘Then, it was the opposite: he [Álex Márquez] copied me when I switched to slicks and Fermín [Aldeguer] stayed one more lap – and it was too late, because he lost a lot of time on that lap’.

The eight-time world champion also highlighted the deep mutual understanding he shares with his brother Álex: ‘I know Álex, he knows me. We talked before the race about how tricky conditions would be. But mentally, the race was super long’.
