Jorge Lorenzo in statements to the Podcast “The Wild Project” spoke about the most serious incidents he witnessed during his career. Recently we mentioned in an article the fatal accident of Marco Simoncelli in Sepang and this time, Lorenzo recalled another memorable moment during his MotoGP career.
This moment was when Marc Márquez had an incident on the straight of the Mugello circuit at over 320 km/h. The eight-time world champion, at the time a rookie in the premier class, had a scare that left many riders worried about the physical condition of the Spanish rider, but fortunately, Marc emerged unscathed from the incident.
Former MotoGP rider and DAZN commentator, Jorge Lorenzo, spoke about this significant event in his career.
– Márquez won eight world championships. But in his first year as a rookie, at the Mugello GP, on Friday, he was going 320 km/h – in Mugello there is an incline and at that speed the bikes lift the front wheel – and when the front wheel lifted and he touched the ground again, he touched the handlebars a bit and the bike went towards the wall instead of going straight. He went towards the wall and, in order not to crash into it at 300 km/h or more, he threw the bike and slid with the bike for 150m. If he didn’t let go of the bike and crashed into the wall, we wouldn’t have Marc Márquez, eight-time world champion. Everything depends on milliseconds and decisions.
He also added: ‘That year, Pedrosa and I crashed twice and had two injuries. Márquez fell about 20 times and had no injuries, and he won the World Championship for us. What is that, luck, coincidence…? Also talent and speed, because if he wasn’t fast, he wouldn’t have won. But in motorcycling luck is very important.’
