93% of motorcyclists would recommend a motorcycle airbag to other motorcyclists for use when traveling. Based on a test of 83 motorcyclists and also on a crash test carried out at CESVIMAP, MAPFRE’s Road Safety and Experimentation Center in Ávila, Spain, it was concluded that the motorcycle airbag is a good safety system and constitutes a major advance in passive safety for the rider and passenger of a motorcycle.

The report “Ergonomics and sensations in the use of airbags for motorcycles” aimed to verify the effectiveness of this safety system as well as to find out the sensations experienced by motorcyclists who use it when driving alone or with a passenger, aspects which, according to the experts, can significantly alter perception and therefore directly or indirectly affect their safety.

Motorcycle Airbags? Toyota Joins Honda in Advancing Rider Safety

MAPFRE – tests airbags on motorcyclists and concludes that they contribute to increased safety.

Honda continues to develop airbags and a new patent emerges

6 out of 10 motorcyclists who use an airbag have a greater feeling of safety (66%), especially those over 50 (70%) and users of megascooters (86%), motorcycles with a larger engine capacity and performance than a 125cc.

Fundación MAPFRE also concluded that there is a certain lack of knowledge on the part of the motorists surveyed about the characteristics and applications of this safety system and recommends that it be legislated for and made available by manufacturers: “Motorcycle manufacturers must continue their efforts to support the use of this system, which is directly applicable to any type of rider, regardless of the type of motorcycle,” says Jesús Monclús, Fundación MAPFRE’s Road Safety and Prevention Manager. On the other hand, he argues that “it is essential to improve information, both for amateurs and professionals who use motorcycles as a work tool and as a means of commuting to work”, since the likelihood of serious injury is reduced by up to 22% with the use of a motorcycle airbag.

Motorcycle crash test at 40 km/h

The report includes the results of an experimental motorcycle crash test at 40 km/h with two occupants equipped with a driver’s airbag. 60% of motorcycle accidents occur at speeds below 40km/h, the speed at which the airbag is effective in this type of vehicle.

The test carried out last week at CESVIMAP’s facilities in Ávila demonstrated the results of the research.

The brand of motorcycle airbag vest used in the test was Aspar Air, which sells two models called 0.5 (270 euros) and 1. 0 (425 euros), which work with a mechanical activation system with a cable, which allows the strap that connects the motorcycle to the rider to be activated the moment the motorcycle falls, tightening and pulling the ball joint which, when released, activates a spring that pierces a gas cartridge that fills the airbag bag in less than 200 milliseconds.

It should be remembered that the number of accidents involving motorcycles has been on the rise in Portugal. According to recent data from the National Road Safety Authority, in 2023 there were 8,936 accidents involving motorcycles, 16.4% more than in 2022.
