There has been much talk about the subject, but it seems that the European Parliament is once again considering the introduction of mandatory health checks every 15 years for drivers and motorcyclists, and every 5 years for people over 70.
The vote will take place today in the European Parliament and is being presented by Karima Delli, a Member of the European Parliament from the European Ecology Party, supported by road accident survivor and athlete Pauline Déroulède.
Karima Delli is the same Member of the European Parliament who, in 2023, proposed lower speed limits for motorcycles, a measure that was widely ridiculed by motorcyclists and motorcycle groups.
Déroulède, a successful tennis player, lost her leg after being hit by an elderly driver while she was on the sidewalk, after the driver confused the brake pedal with the accelerator. Currently, Déroulède is a member of the French wheelchair tennis Paralympic team and is campaigning for stricter controls on elderly drivers.
The proposed test will assess the driver’s vision, hearing, and reflexes, and the doctor may revoke their driver’s license if they do not meet the required standards.
