A decade ago, a young Lydia Ko embarked on a journey into the realm of psychology at Korea University, driven by a fascination with human behavior. However, her relentless pursuit of golfing greatness, which yielded three Olympic medals and multiple LPGA major titles, forced her to put her academic aspirations on hold. Now, as she approaches what she calls her ‘retirement age’ of 30, Ko is determined to reignite that old flame at Stanford University.

In a candid interview on 5 Clubs with Gary Williams, Ko bared her soul about her unfulfilled dream of playing college golf in the U.S., singling out Stanford as her top choice. Expressing a sense of longing for the collegiate experience she missed out on, Ko’s yearning for personal growth beyond the golf course is palpable. She shared, “I kind of feel left out because that’s part of my career that I wasn’t able to experience.”

Despite her unparalleled success in golf, including victories at prestigious tournaments like the Evian Championship and AIG Women’s Open, Ko’s passion for psychology underscores her quest for self-discovery. Her unwavering dedication to both her sport and her academic dreams speaks volumes about her insatiable drive to excel in all facets of life.

As Ko grapples with the pressures of nearing the twilight of her golfing career and the pursuit of a career Grand Slam, her mental fortitude is put to the test. The golfer’s openness about her mental health struggles sheds light on the challenges she faces both on and off the course. By working closely with a mental coach and finding solace in personal endeavors like adopting a puppy named Kai, Ko is striving to strike a balance between her professional and personal life.

Lydia Ko’s courageous decision to pursue her long-buried dream serves as a testament to her resilience and unwavering spirit. As she charts a new course towards academic fulfillment, the world watches in awe of this golfing maverick’s unyielding determination to carve out her own legacy beyond the fairways and greens.
