Lucas Coenen secured his first-ever win in the premier class of the MXGP Motocross World Championship this Monday at the MXGP of Switzerland – and did so by winning both races in Frauenfeld.

The Belgian Red Bull KTM rider won the first race and then made the holeshot in the second to take an early lead. No one passed Coenen until the end, in what was a clear display of dominance.

Tim Gajser (Honda HRC) was in pursuit until a spectacular crash on lap three took him out of the race. Maxime Renaux (Monster Energy Yamaha) then moved up… only to crash as well, after a jump.

With Coenen alone out front and Romain Febvre (Kawasaki) managing to secure second place without challenge, the final laps featured an intense battle for third. Jeremy Seewer (Aruba.it Ducati) ultimately got the better of Jeffrey Herlings (Red Bull KTM) by around six seconds, although he had been behind the Dutchman going into the final two laps.

The top five was rounded out by Andrea Bonacorsi (Fantic), meaning four manufacturers featured in the first five positions.

In the final classification, Coenen won the MXGP of Switzerland with a perfect 50 points, ahead of Febvre with 37. The podium was completed by Seewer with 34 points – tied with Bonacorsi.
