In July, rumors surfaced that Lewis Hamilton was in talks to acquire a MotoGP team, with speculation around negotiations with Gresini. These rumors have now intensified following comments from the CEO of Liberty Media, which owns Formula 1 and is preparing to complete the acquisition of Dorna, the promoter of MotoGP.

According to SPEEDWEEK.com, Gregg Maffei stated during a Goldman Sachs conference that the company had been approached by individuals interested in owning MotoGP teams, including Hamilton:

– When we confirmed that we were going to acquire MotoGP, people who wanted to buy a team contacted us right away, people like Lewis Hamilton. And why? Because they saw what we did with Formula 1 and want to join the bandwagon. We’d like to continue these conversations, but now we have to wait for the «okay» from the EU.

When the rumors initially emerged, the seven-time F1 world champion, an avid MotoGP fan who has even had the chance to ride a MotoGP bike, commented: ‘I’ve always loved MotoGP. I’m interested in the potential growth of the sport, but I haven’t looked that far into it just yet. But anything’s possible. I’m definitely interested in, as I said before, about equity and already with the Broncos, it was already a first step in team ownership. And so, yeah, I think over the next five to 10 years, there’ll be hopefully more. We’ll see where’.
