The third round of the World Superbike Championship (WorldSBK) took place at the emblematic TT Circuit Assen, in the Netherlands, and brought unexpected moments that will go down in the history of the competition. Under unpredictable weather conditions and with strategic decisions making the difference, Italian Nicholas Spinelli and Australian Remy Gardner achieved their first major feats in the top category of Superbikes.

Nicholas Spinelli, filling in for the injured Danilo Petrucci in the Barni Spark Racing Team, had one of the most memorable moments of the weekend when he won the first race on his WorldSBK debut. The track conditions, wet from the rain that had fallen earlier, made the choice of tires a determining factor.

While most riders opted for slick tires, Spinelli chose intermediate tires, both front and rear, a decision that was helped by a pre-race phone call from Petrucci. The Italian, who started from 11th position, quickly took the lead and even had a 25-second advantage. However, as the track dried, Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) and Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) came dangerously close. A well-timed red flag when two-thirds of the race was completed confirmed Spinelli’s victory, guaranteeing him a dream debut in the championship.

Gardner on the podium: Persistence rewarded

In the second race, it was Remy Gardner’s (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) turn to write his name in the history books. The Australian rider, who had been showing consistency since the end of last season, finally achieved his first podium in WorldSBK. After a fourth place in Race 1 and a solid performance in the Tissot Superpole Race, Gardner climbed to third place in Race 2, the result of a close battle with Razgatlioglu and Bautista, who finished ahead of him.

The Australian’s achievement was all the more special because it took place at Assen, a track with great prestige in the history of motorcycling. Gardner finished just one second behind the winner, consolidating his status as one of the names to follow this season.

The weekend at Assen once again demonstrated the unpredictability and excitement of the World Superbike Championship, where talent, strategy and weather conditions can transform the history of a race in an instant. The next round promises to bring even more action and surprises in this season full of emerging protagonists.
