Spain’s Jorge Prado became the 2024 MXGP world champion after an intense final battle with Tim Gajser. With a win in the first race and a strategic fourth place in the second, Prado secured the points needed to secure the title, beating Gajser by a dozen points in the final standings.

The first race saw Prado (GASGAS) take the win, with the Spaniard thus putting one and a half hands on the title after beating his most direct opponent in the title fight, Gajser (Honda), by 2.766s. Jeremy Seewer (Kawasaki) was third, ahead of his teammate Romain Febvre.

Jeffrey Herlings (KTM), who mathematically still had a chance of the title – before this round – subject to a few conditions, was sixth, behind Alberto Forato (Honda).

With the final race, Gajser could still dream of the title in the category, but he was starting out with an almost impossible mission.

Herlings ended up winning and thus closing the year on a high note, beating Febvre by 5.501s, and Gajser was on the podium, probably having one of the least happy podiums, as he saw Prado, in fourth, managing the race and “simply” riding away to take another title, renewing a world championship that he defended, with a few pitfalls and less positive rounds this year. Seewer rounded off the podium.

In the end, with 43 points, Prado won the GP and finished the year with 996 points, 10 more than Gajser who, with 42 points, was unable to “steal” the title from his opponent, who had been leading the year until very recently, but the round in Shanghai, China, before this one, turned out to be decisive.
