Joe Roberts was one of the protagonists in the Moto2 Spanish GP race. The OnlyFans American Racing Team rider led at one point, but ended up in second place just behind Fermín Aldeguer (Beta Tools SpeedUp/Boscoscuro).
The result promoted the American to the championship lead, at a time when he is seen as a strong potential candidate to move up to MotoGP next year… with Trackhouse Racing.
The Aprilia satellite team currently has Miguel Oliveira and Raúl Fernández, both of whom are nearing the end of their contracts. Having a rider from the United States of America is an ambition of Justin Marks’ project, and Roberts seems to be the ideal candidate in the short term.
With three consecutive second places and the championship lead, the rider is showing that he deserves a potential spot. However, it is also true that there are some factors against him: he is approaching 27 years old and has been competing in Moto2 since 2018, only showing this year that he is capable of consistently fighting at the top.
But the potential seems to be there and Trackhouse Racing may indeed choose Roberts, in an increasingly speculated scenario. Oliveira has shown difficulties in this early part of the season despite having the latest version of the competitive Aprilia RS-GP. Fernández has also not impressed, but is showing gradual progress and starting to get into the fight for the top ten.
