Japanese Tennis Star Exposes Shocking Racism Incident in Rome

In a shocking revelation, Yoshihito Nishioka, the Japanese tennis sensation, opened up about a disturbing incident of racism he faced in Rome. The 29-year-old athlete disclosed that during a match in Rome a couple of years ago, he was subjected to racial abuse by fans in the Italian capital.

Nishioka expressed his solidarity with Jakub Mensik, who recently experienced harassment from spectators during the Rome Masters. The reigning Miami Masters champion was targeted by a group of people shouting “double fault” during his match against Fabian Marozsan. Despite the ordeal, Mensik triumphed in a challenging match against Matteo Gigante in the second round.

Recalling his own traumatic encounter with racism, Nishioka revealed that Italian fans taunted him with derogatory remarks like ‘let’s go sushi’ and ‘come on, China.’ The tennis star took to social media to share his harrowing experience and shed light on the prevalence of such discriminatory behavior in sports events.

Having competed in the Foro Italico for seven Rome editions, Nishioka highlighted the recurring nature of such incidents in the tournament. Despite his consistent participation, the Japanese player has struggled to make significant advancements in the competition, with only two appearances in the second round.

Nishioka’s courageous decision to speak out against racism in tennis serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by athletes of diverse backgrounds. The tennis community must address and combat such unacceptable behavior to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for players from all walks of life.
