Francesco Bagnaia cut the MotoGP Thailand Grand Prix in third – he was promoted to second place after Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM) was penalized. However, he made a final attempt to reach victory on the last corner in Buriram, trying a double overtake on the outside of Jorge Martín (Prima Pramac/Ducati) and Binder.
The Italian Ducati rider believes it would have been a remarkable overtaking move, but he is also aware that it would have been difficult and in any case the result was satisfactory: ‘If I completed this overtake, it would have been the best overtake in recent years I think – because overtaking two riders on the outside in the last corner would have been great. But I think it’s normal that when you’re on the outside and a rider is on the inside, they release the brakes a bit and touch. It’s normal and I would do the same. So, I was expecting it, but I wondered if I was a bit further ahead. This overtake would have changed the result, but overall I’m happy – anything more than this would have been very difficult‘.
On the other hand, Bagnaia clarified what prevented him from overtaking Martín and Binder: ‘I tried, but coming out of turns one and three I was without tire, so I was always losing a lot. I was gaining in sector three, but it wasn’t enough to be close. And I was expecting Brad to overtake Jorge, but he didn’t have a perfect chance. So, it was difficult for me to have an opportunity‘.
