Another top three for Marc Márquez. This Saturday, the Gresini rider started from third and finished second in the Sprint race of the Americas GP – reaching the position he finished right after the start.
With no chance of keeping up with leader Maverick Viñales (Aprilia), the eight-time world champion finished 2.294s behind the winner. During part of the race, he faced strong pressure from Pedro Acosta (Red Bull GasGas Tech3/KTM), but after the rookie was overtaken by Jorge Martín (Prima Pramac/Ducati), no one else was able to challenge Márquez.
The #93 explained in a quick interview to the official broadcast that after a good start, he had a drop in his feelings, eventually consolidating his position later:
– It was a bit harder than I expected. In the first lap I was very strong, and in the second lap. But then I started to not feel so good and decided to wait for the right moment. I was leading the group, but when Pedro attacked me I said, “Well, now is the moment.” And then I was half a second faster on the next lap and that’s when I was able to open up the gap.
Márquez now wants to improve in order to try to keep up with Viñales in the main race in Austin, as he emphasized: ‘Tomorrow we need to understand… let’s look at that first sector and where we can improve to be with Viñales‘.
