MotoGP will fall under the control of Liberty Media, which in early April announced the acquisition of a majority stake in the promoter entity – Dorna. The American company already owns Formula 1 and has been successful since 2017, but Aleix Espargaró warns that not everything can be applied to MotoGP.
For now, the Spaniard is cautious about the impact of the new owners: ‘I don’t know what to think. We need to give time, we need to wait. I spoke with Carlos Ezpeleta [sports director of Dorna], he called me. And what he told me was that we need to be patient, it will take time to understand which direction we need to follow‘.
That said, Espargaró emphasized that it will not be possible to simply “copy and paste” what was done in F1: ‘It’s not that you can copy everything Formula 1 did with Liberty – it’s a different sport. But it looks promising, honestly. We have to wait‘.
The entry of Liberty Media could mean a busier schedule for the riders with marketing commitments and with the public, and #41 has already criticized the current workload. However, he acknowledged that reaching more people is necessary:
– If you analyze the last two seasons, I always try to do different and new things, create a YouTube channel, do various things – because I understand that we need to reach more people. This is a show after all. It is one of the best shows in the world, but it is not as famous as it should be.
