In just his second Grand Prix, Pedro Acosta climbed onto the MotoGP podium for the first time. The Red Bull GasGas Tech3 rookie finished in third place at the Portuguese GP.
One of the rivals who finished ahead of him was the winner Jorge Martín (Prima Pramac/Ducati), who pointed out in a press conference that Acosta’s performance was expected… and his achievement in Portimão reminded him of his own beginnings:
– Well, first of all, I’m not surprised. He reminds me a bit of myself, I also finished third in my second race. It is true that he will be one of the toughest riders to beat in the future, but it’s not a surprise because we knew he has the talent and now he is here with us.
When he made his MotoGP debut in 2021, Martín achieved his first podium at the Doha GP, finishing third after starting from pole position. After getting injured at the Portuguese GP, he managed to secure three more podiums that year – always from pole position – including his first victory.
Acosta is now chasing his first win, and if it happens before the German GP, he will become the youngest ever winner of a MotoGP race – breaking a record held by Marc Márquez since 2013.
