If a year ago we received with great skepticism the remote possibility of a J H2 scooter powerful enough to break all laws, including the law of common sense, now it doesn’t seem so unlikely that the Akashi company is preparing the operation that would revolutionize the world of crossovers and adventures: a hypothetical Versys 1000 H2, a new supercharged crossover that could also be the basis for other models, a different platform from the current one with a 1,043cc inline four-cylinder engine, used in the Z1000 and Z1000SX, capable of producing 120 hp of power and 102 Nm of torque, a very good and achievable performance, in line with the usage philosophy and versatility of the Versys.
Before delving into this issue, let’s give a brief explanation of the capabilities of the H2 model’s engine, just to make it clear that such a hypothesis is not as complex as one might think at first glance.
The 998cc Balanced Supercharged four-cylinder is a true technological marvel based on Kawasaki Heavy Industries’ extensive experience in aeronautics.
The introduction of this device, in manual terms, would provide its benefit at higher revs due to the well-known tendency of centrifugal compressors to reach their maximum potential when rotating very fast, but anyone who has driven an H2 will not fail to share the opinion that there is plenty of power at low and medium revs and that the delivery is surprising. This is due to the fact that, for the same displacement and power, with a turbocharger, we can have very constant low and medium revs and, moreover, with less mechanical effort due to generally lower revs.
210 hp of power with the air box under pressure is a considerable power for a 1000 cc not intended for hyper sports use, but what may not always be fully evident is that the Kawasaki engine (born in 2014, worth remembering) despite its complexity and refinement maintains a normal fuel consumption regime and a regular delivery in the homologated versions, in short, an engine that we would see very well covering kilometers in all conditions.
Perhaps all these features must have helped to instill in Bimota’s marketing and engineers the conviction that it was not such a bad idea to conceive the Tera that debuted at EICMA 2023, a crossover with a 17-inch front wheel equipped with the 200 hp H2 engine.
Now, Bimota (which is strongly linked to Kawasaki on a business level) has already done it, and has in its DNA the creation of exclusive and ultra-premium motorcycles, so why couldn’t Kawasaki do it directly, including a hypothetical Versys 1000 H2 on its list? Furthermore, there is currently no Adventure in Akashi with a 19-inch front wheel. Would it be so strange to think of a Versys 1000 H2 S (completely invented and hypothetical name, it should be noted) destined for the Maxienduro segment?
