The aftermath of Marc Márquez’s departure from Honda has been filled with speculation about his potential replacement. One name that has frequently emerged in these discussions is Johann Zarco, who has already signed with LCR, Honda’s satellite team, for the 2024 season.
When previously asked about the possibility of moving to Honda, the Frenchman mentioned: ‘It’s a tripartite contract; Honda can decide where to place me‘.
However, Lucio Cecchinello, the man behind LCR, is not excited about the idea of Zarco filling the vacant spot at Honda: ‘I hope for respect… if they take Zarco away from me, I lose the sponsors that support me. I promised them a rider capable of achieving results. Without sponsors, I don’t have the funds to provide bikes to Honda. Nor do I want to consider that possibility‘, as reported by L’Équipe.
Rumors have been intense, suggesting that Honda could be eyeing one of the Aprilia riders, either Maverick Viñales or Miguel Oliveira, as they seem interested in having an experienced rider. However, Massimo Rivola, CEO of Aprilia Racing, seems determined not to let any of his riders leave.
The question remains: given the current phase of his career, would Zarco refuse an offer from a factory team? His manager, Guillaume Valladeau, commented: ‘I understand Lucio Cecchinello’s position, but Marc’s departure opens a door, and Johann is a talented rider. If the opportunity arises, he shouldn’t refuse it‘.
Within the LCR team, efforts will be made to retain Zarco for 2024. Besides the significant sponsorship issue, the LCR Honda team boss emphasized that with them, Zarco would have dedicated technicians ready to provide him with the best possible bike.
As it stands, Zarco, currently with Prima Pramac Racing, may not have much influence on the team’s internal decisions about whether he will be promoted to the official bike or not. However, it seems that Honda will keep their cards close to their chest until the end of the current season, leaving fans and experts in suspense about who will take Márquez’s place.
