The long race of the Japanese GP was interrupted when 12 laps had been completed, and it seems that it was a consensual decision, not only by the organization, but also among the drivers.
Jorge Martín, winner of the two races of the weekend, stated in the debrief that the red flag came at the right time and that he was even a little upset when he was told there would be a restart:
– Yes, yes (right time for red flag). I was very upset when we went out (the second time), there was no visibility and I couldn’t see my team. Then I was very happy (when it didn’t start). It doesn’t feel like a victory, because it wasn’t a complete race, so the feeling is not the same, but for sure, full points and that’s what matters the most.
#89 was even more surprised by the restart, as he had been talking to Carlos Ezpeleta explaining how difficult the conditions were:
– Yes, it was quite surprising, because two minutes before I spoke with Carlos (Ezpeleta) and told him that it was really difficult. And as soon as I spoke with him, we went out on the track, so the conditions were the same, but with less light, so it was difficult.
