Francesco Bagnaia ended Friday’s MotoGP French GP Practice in third place – 0.184s off the leader, his Ducati Lenovo teammate Marc Márquez.

The Italian explained that he has come to terms with the fact that the Desmosedici GP25 no longer gives him what he wants from the bike, so he is seeking alternative ways to perform well:

Fabio Quartararo battles despair as Yamaha’s limitations loom large, yet sparks of hope flicker amidst chaos

– It was a good Friday. I’m happy with the improvement I did and we did, and I’m confident with the package. I finally understood after six Grands Prix that what I want from the bike is not there anymore. So, I have to find performance in different ways. We tried everything to find again what I wanted – which is braking entry in a more solid way. This season I feel much more movement on the front in this area. So, today I just tried to adapt myself and take a step by myself and it finally worked. I’m not confident to do it, but it’s the only way to be more competitive. I feel mad that my strongest point, which was braking entry, is not a good thing anymore. But it is what it is and I need to work on it.

Despite the challenges, Bagnaia not only rules out returning to the Desmosedici GP24, he also hopes to receive the new chassis soon: ‘I’m always giving my maximum, but I’m trying to find the performance with this bike in a different way, and today I did it and it worked quite well. Tomorrow morning we’ll take another step. But I think going back to the old spec is not a good idea. So, let’s continue like this, let’s try different things to adapt to it. Today Marc tried the chassis that he tried in Jerez, maybe it’s an improvement – I will not use it here because I don’t have enough time to test it well, but I will use it from Aragón’.

The 2022 and 2023 world champion acknowledged that this adaptation is no easy task: ‘It’s not an easy process, because I’ve been riding like this from 2020; the bike has changed, but the feeling on braking entry was very similar. And this season it’s not. I can’t find this feeling again, so we are working on it. We are working to understand what to do differently. My team is doing an amazing job, and so is Ducati. But we need to accept it and try to be able to be fast in different ways’.

Asked whether this adaptation involves more risks, Bagnaia replied: ‘Let’s see, I don’t know. My confidence with the front of the bike is not at the top at the moment. Riding like this, I’m taking less risk to be fast. So, let’s try to do this weekend like this, and then the next one in Silverstone, which is another track where this kind of riding style suits well. Let’s see’.
