Aleix Espargaró finished the Catalunya GP in 4th position overall. The Spanish rider confirmed this weekend that he will retire at the end of the season, but it didn’t stop him from having a very positive GP with a victory in the Sprint race.
With these results, the Aprilia Racing rider is in seventh place in the MotoGP world championship. In the debrief, Aleix talked about his race and the sensations he had during it.
– Today with the medium tire I never felt good, not as strong and comfortable as yesterday, I did everything I could to be competitive. I couldn’t follow the riders in front, in the end I tried to keep up with Marc, but I just slid and slid and couldn’t do it. I tried to keep the tires well preserved, but at the beginning I was sliding a lot and couldn’t keep up with the riders in front. We concluded with Michelin and Aprilia that it would be better with the medium, but unfortunately it didn’t work out for me. I tried everything in the end to pass Marc, in the right turns he didn’t have much grip, I was going to try in turn 14, but I decided it was better not to cause a big mess here in Catalunya for Marc and for me it wasn’t worth it.
Asked about the last laps and the battle with Marc Márquez, Aleix replied: ‘In the last four laps I was really on the limit, but I knew that if I was close to him, he could make a mistake, but Marc is Marc and he didn’t make any mistakes.’
