The second round of the AMA Pro Motocross championship at Hangtown confirmed Haiden Deegan’s absolute dominance in the 250MX class, with the young rider adding two more victories to his tally, extending his consecutive moto wins to three this season.

First Moto:

The first moto started with Chance Hymas shooting to the early lead, but a track excursion on a hill climb allowed Casey Cochran to take command of the race. Cochran, competing in only his third moto of the season after missing all of supercross due to a broken leg suffered in November, showed impressive determination by leading several laps.

The early stages were marked by an incident involving Tom Vialle and Ryder DiFrancesco, with the GasGas rider collecting DiFrancesco’s rear end after his own crash. Vialle would eventually pull off, scoring 40th place.

Haiden Deegan, who had started around seventh, methodically began his march forward. After reaching a podium position, the rider wasn’t satisfied and continued climbing through the field until he passed Cochran for the lead. From there, Deegan controlled the race to the chequered flag, claiming another victory.

Jo Shimoda maintained his impressive consistency by finishing second, 6.997 seconds behind Deegan, adding his third consecutive second-place finish of the season. Levi Kitchen completed the podium after a notable recovery, battling several Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki teammates in the process.

The first moto classification was completed with Ty Masterpool in fourth and Michael Mosiman in fifth in a very strong ride. Chance Hymas, who had several off-track excursions, finished only 13th, while Jeremy Martin saw his race end prematurely due to a crash, placing 34th.

Second Moto

The second moto, shortened from 30 to 25 minutes plus two laps, didn’t change the script for Haiden Deegan, although victory wasn’t handed to him on a silver platter. Casey Cochran again impressed with the holeshot, but it was Lance Kobusch who took the lead and held it for several laps.

Deegan, who hadn’t started among the leaders, again began his progression through the field. When he reached Kobusch, many expected him to pass easily, but the rider resisted bravely, providing one of the race’s finest spectacles. The two riders exchanged positions several times and even jumped side by side, in a pure display of motocross racing.

Eventually, Deegan managed to pull away for another uncontested victory, later revealing he had been ill during the race and felt his throat closing up during the moto – something that was noticeable in his voice after the race.

Jo Shimoda again demonstrated his class by claiming second place in this moto, after starting several positions back and having to pass several riders, including in an interesting battle involving Levi Kitchen and Casey Cochran. Cochran, who had ridden well early on, would eventually fade to 12th place.

Tom Vialle showed character by returning after retiring from the first moto, fighting his way to eighth place after a mediocre start.
