The future of Marc Márquez outside of Repsol Honda continues to be unofficial, but on the sidelines of the MotoGP Japan GP Gigi Dall’Igna may have let slip an unofficial confirmation. The rider has been linked to Gresini, with a satellite Ducati.
The general manager of Ducati Corse stated in an interview with Sky Sport Italia: ‘Marc has been one of the strongest riders in history. Therefore, his desire to be in a Ducati can only make us happy. He decided to leave Honda for an unofficial Ducati: at most, this underlines the fact that he wants our bike’.
Asked if this is a sign that Márquez has already made his decision, Dall’Igna poured cold water on it by stating: ‘That’s what I heard, but of course it’s not official yet. I think there are many things to do and I believe it’s a complicated contract to break. In case he wants to break it clearly… but it seems to me that these are the statements made. From our point of view, they are satisfactory’.
Stressing that nothing is confirmed yet, the Ducati manager considers that if Márquez joins Gresini, it will be up to the manufacturer to manage it: ‘The arrival is still to be defined; there is still no official confirmation. But, besides that, we are focused on the current championship, which still has a lot to say. And there are still several races to go. Márquez is, for several reasons, a formidable rider: there is certainly concern about possibly disrupting the balance within the Ducati teams. But this may eventually be part of the game and it is up to us to manage the situation well‘.
