The MotoGP Indonesian GP brought mixed emotions for Honda. On one hand, the factory team saw its riders, Joan Mir and Luca Marini, retire from the race. On the other hand, Johann Zarco brought an RC213V into the top ten for the first time in 2024, riding for the satellite team LCR Honda.

Marini crashed out on the first lap after being involved in an accident with three other riders. Mir, affected by the same incident, lost significant time, and while recovering, ended up crashing and retiring from the race.

However, LCR Honda had a much more positive Sunday in Mandalika. Despite the race having multiple retirements, Zarco earned Honda’s first top ten of the year through his own merit.

The Frenchman started seventh, finished eighth in the Sprint race, and crossed the line ninth in the main race, battling for the top ten early on – even before most of the retirements occurred.

As for Takaaki Nakagami, he finished 11th. The Japanese rider made a gradual recovery, largely due to other riders’ crashes, ultimately making only one genuine overtake for position against Augusto Fernández (Red Bull GasGas Tech3/KTM).

Nevertheless, to finish a race, the bike’s potential must allow for good performance, avoiding handling issues that could lead to errors – or knowing how to deal with those potential handicaps effectively.
