The difference of just over €1,000 must be justified between the base version of the Nightster and the Nightster Special, so before a deep analysis of what it was like to ride this bike, let’s understand what sets them apart. We start with the wheels, which in the Special version stand out for a greater number of aluminum arms, in gray, instead of the black color with fewer arms found in the base version. Looking up a bit, the headlight protection disappeared in the 2023 base version (since it was standard on the bike we tested in 2022), something that the Special version comes equipped with. The passenger seat also comes standard in the Special version, something not found in the base version, as well as the TFT panel that replaces the analog display found as standard on the base Nightster. We also have a riser on the handlebar, to raise it by about 12 cm in the Special version, which proved to be quite satisfying in the ride. Finally, the Harley-Davidson emblem present in both versions is different, with the Special integrating the Milwaukee brand emblem in a retro 70s style.
THE HEART
When we tested the Nightster for the first time, in its base version, we were quite pleased with the motorcycle’s chassis, but also with the Revolution Max 975T engine. This time was no different. Mechanically there is no difference in this Special version, so the behavior remains identical to what we felt about a year ago. The 89 hp and 95 Nm of maximum torque respond quite well, especially in Sport mode, which turned out to be the mode in which we rode 90% of the time, since in Road and Rain modes we have to twist the throttle too much to feel that something is really happening. The great asset of this engine is its ability to stretch and deliver everything it has practically throughout the entire rev range. As expected, at low revs it suffers more, with some vibration, but above 2,500 rpm it showed to have plenty of strength and liveliness up to the rev limit. Similar to the base version, we feel that the motorcycle still has quite long gear ratios. And being electronically limited to 180 km/h, we can confirm that in 4th gear it is possible to reach the limiter – tested on a closed and controlled circuit, obviously. THE BEST Engine elasticity, riding position, stability TO IMPROVE Gear ratios, rear shock absorber, riding modes THE BODYAs mentioned earlier, the Special version remains unchanged in terms of mechanical parts, including suspensions, brakes, and wheel size – despite the different rims. At the front, we have a 41 mm Showa suspension and a single 320 mm Brembo signature brake disc, while at the rear, we have double shock absorbers and a 260 mm disc. All of this translates into excellent performance on winding roads, with the suspension working in harmony with the frame, giving us more and more confidence in each turn, knowing that the brakes will be up to any situation, offering good feel and power. In daily rides, it also proved to be quite comfortable, with a precious help from the seat, with a less positive note for the rear shocks that could benefit from more travel for greater comfort. Comfort is something we gain with the handlebar raised about 12 cm, as mentioned earlier, providing a more comfortable and natural riding position, without interfering with how we ride this motorcycle.
MORE TECHNOLOGICAL
We previously mentioned that Harley-Davidson equipped the Special version with a color TFT panel, instead of the analog panel that comes with the base version. Therefore, it is possible to connect the mobile phone and intercom to this motorcycle, making it possible to give voice commands. The information layout is beautiful and the information navigation controls are quite intuitive. In terms of technological additions, we also have, as standard, a tire pressure sensor, the possibility to turn off traction control, and full LED lighting – very effective in low light situations.
EASY CHOICE
The Harley-Davidson Nightster Special may not have huge differences from the base version, and perhaps for many it is difficult to justify the extra €1,300. Still, the Special version has additions that clearly justify the price differential, whether it’s because you can take a passenger, or because there is more technology and a more comfortable riding position. The more vintage touch of this version may also be appealing to H-D fans. At the end of the day, the mechanics are the same and still well refined, so the choice will come down to the added value of the extras of this Special. Between one and the other, we would go with the Special.
