Japanese tennis maestro Kei Nishikori, at the ripe age of 35, openly confronts the reality of his career twilight while committing to a positive outlook and the joy of relishing every moment left on the court. This candid admission comes on the heels of a hard-won triumph over Jaume Munar in the initial round at Indian Wells, marking a beacon of hope amidst a string of recent losses.

Nishikori, presently sitting at a modest global rank of 76, has had a less than stellar record of late, with just two wins in his past six matches. However, he retains an admirable 7-5 record for 2025, largely attributed to his commendable runner-up performance in Hong Kong earlier this year.

Injuries have undoubtedly taken their toll on the former world No. 4. He’s endured surgeries on his elbow in 2019 and hip in 2022, which have dramatically impacted his game. Yet, the Japanese star has consistently defied expectations, refusing to capitulate to these formidable challenges.

Nishikori offered an introspective view of his current standing in tennis, stating, “At 35, I am more conscious of my career’s exit than its past. The frustration I experience now differs from my younger years, triggering a unique spectrum of emotions.” Despite acknowledging the final chapters of his career, he insists on embracing the journey, even when victories are elusive. He further expressed his desire to effectively manage his mental state, maintaining equanimity irrespective of the match outcome.

It’s worth noting that had he clinched the ATP 250 tournament in Hong Kong, it would have marked his first title since 2019, a testament to the struggle he has faced in recent years. However, true to his resilient spirit, Nishikori’s journey continues as he prepares to take on Ugo Humbert in the second round at Indian Wells.

In a career marked by highs, lows, and exceptional resilience, Nishikori’s determination to enjoy his remaining time on the court, irrespective of results, serves as a shining example of his unwavering passion for the sport. Despite the challenges and the looming end of his professional journey, his spirit remains unbroken, a testament to his legacy in the tennis world.
