The Sprint race format was introduced this season in MotoGP with great success among the public. However, it continues to divide opinions among the riders, with many finding it too intense. This doesn’t make Dorna change their minds, wanting to keep the concept intact in 2024.
The sporting director of the championship’s promoter, Carlos Ezpeleta, told SPEEDWEEK.com that one season is not enough to make a careful evaluation of the format: ‘There is always a measure of what is too much. I believe that 40 years ago they would probably say that 18 races were too many. It depends on what you compare it to. We talk a lot with the riders and they have a strong voice in the championship. […]. There are also other factors in the bikes. The differences are smaller than ever, and I think it is a bit too early to have a complete picture if this new format is only one season old. We will continue to talk to the riders and evaluate the format‘.
Questioned about whether anything will change in the Sprint races for 2024, the official was clear: ‘No, we intend to continue with the format, as it works very well – both with the spectators on the track and with the viewers at home’.
