Despite leaving Repsol Honda, Marc Márquez always avoided talking about a definitive farewell to the manufacturer he has represented throughout his MotoGP career so far. The rider leaves the door open for a future return. And Honda?
The newspaper Marca questioned team director Alberto Puig about whether there is an intention to rehire Márquez as soon as possible. In response, the Spanish man stated: ‘The intention of Honda, currently, is to improve the bike. We need to have a competitive bike again. That is the number one point, the most important. Then, logically, develop the bike during the winter and compete in 2024 and see what bike we have and what our riders can do with that bike. And, from the middle of the season onwards, see where we really stand‘.
Puig’s understanding is that it would be ‘unreasonable to think beyond‘ this absolute priority of improving performance – thus refusing to give a definitive answer on whether Honda will want to have Márquez back or not. Remember that the contract that binds him to Gresini is only valid until 2024.
