Davide Brivio, Trackhouse MotoGP team principal, clarified that Manuel González’s potential test with the Aprilia is not an evaluation for a possible signing, but rather a unique opportunity offered to the Moto2 leader. The Italian official made sure to contextualise the decision within the recent difficulties of the Italian manufacturer.

Asked whether the test represents an evaluation given the problems with Raul Fernández and Jorge Martín, Brivio was categorical: ‘Yeah but it’s not [a trial, to a potential deal]. First of all this is Trackhouse, let’s say, activity, and maybe this is just that Trackhouse is a different team from the others. We have a possibility to make a present to a young rider, of course we would like to do this for two guys, not just one, and this time is for him and maybe some other time there will be another one, I don’t know, but it’s just that at the moment.’

Regarding the specific choice of González over other young talents like Diogo Moreira, the Trackhouse director explained the selection criteria. ‘No no, we only had been in contact with Manu. As I said, it’s just few riders who deserve this, but we cannot have a group testing in one day so we had to make a choice and it’s better to have one than nobody, and that’s it, a present to a young rider, a golden opportunity and we hope he will be happy.’

Brivio also revealed that definitive confirmation of the test depended on contractual details that had to be resolved on the same day. ‘Then again, it is not 100% confirmed, we are working on details with his manager, his team to see if it’s possible and today we have to finalize everything,’ he admitted. Asked about the tight deadlines, the official justified: ‘We are in a racing environment and everything goes fast so we have to do it by this sunday.’
