David Alonso’s superiority was once again evident in the second practice session of the Italian Moto3 GP. Once again, the championship leader was the fastest and set a new lap record at the Mugello circuit.
Although the Colombian was the first to complete a flying lap, the rider who led for the longest time was José Antonio Rueda (Red Bull KTM Ajo). The Spaniard moved to the top with six minutes elapsed and improved his time four times to stay at the top for over 20 minutes.
He was eventually beaten by Ivan Ortolá (MT Helmets-MSi/KTM), but in the final minutes it was Alonso (CFMoto Valresa Aspar) who prevailed with two fast laps that led him to the circuit record: 1m53.926s.
Ryusei Yamanaka (MT Helmets-MSi/KTM) was the closest competitor, 0.720s behind, while Collin Veijer (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) finished third. Stefano Nepa (LevelUp MTA/KTM) and Ortolá completed the top five ahead of Rueda.
The combined times of the two sessions largely corresponded to those of this session, as only one rider did not improve. Luca Lunetta (SIC58 Squadra Corse/Honda) finished 14th, securing the last direct spot in the second qualifying session. He was only 0.013s ahead of his teammate Filippo Farioli to achieve this.
