The Spanish tax authority continues with its policy of a “heavy hand” for offenders, but Dani Pedrosa managed to win his legal battles and will have to receive 22 million euros.
According to the Motorsport.com website, authorities investigated possible irregularities in the tax residency of the KTM test rider – which was declared as being in the United Kingdom, then moving to Switzerland. The tax authorities tried to demonstrate that Pedrosa continued to live in Spain, being considered a “big debtor” in 2015 and 2016. The situation caused a legal battle, with several appeals, for alleged debts since the 2000s.
Now, a statement from Pedrosa and his lawyer, David Gil Fernández, confirmed that the court forced the Spanish tax authorities to refund the income tax for 2005 and 2006 – a decision that can be appealed to the Supreme Court. However, the Tax Authority will have to reimburse the Spaniard with 2,418,373.20 euros, plus interest and legal costs. On the other hand, Pedrosa will have to settle the income tax for 2008 and 2009 and 2011 to 2014, as well as the Wealth Tax for 2013 and 2014 – in addition to the pecuniary sanctions that had already been annulled.
