The document approved at the plenary session of the European Parliament could contribute to the survival of the internal combustion engine in the face of the deadlines imposed by the “Fit for 55” package on the automotive sector.
In the text, concerning heavy transport, an amendment is approved that establishes the definition of “CO2-neutral fuels.” This definition, according to Member of Parliament Massimiliano Salini, who presented the amendment, is a true historic step towards introducing the biofuels promoted by Italy into the complex legislative mechanisms of the EU, which – potentially and according to the Member of Parliament, who speaks of an “excellent result” – could save the internal combustion engine.
As highlighted by Salini himself, this is a regulatory precedent that could have effects throughout the automotive sector, as it is part of a “legislative dossier prepared by the plenary assembly of the European Parliament.” Everything will also take place in the subsequent negotiations, including the Trilogue (an informal body that deals with reaching a provisional agreement on a legislative proposal between the representatives of the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, and the European Commission). However, in the same session, the amendment on the carbon correction factor, which would have considered the contribution of “CO2-neutral fuels” in future regulations, was rejected, as it was deemed inappropriate for the Commission’s objectives by the European Commissioner for Climate Action, Wopke Hoekstra.
