The rivalry between Christian Horner and Toto Wolff has added yet another layer of drama to an already heated Formula 1 season. The latest round of barbs came during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend, where Horner turned Wolff’s “yapping terrier” jab into a badge of honor.
The Backstory
The tension stems from the fallout between Max Verstappen and George Russell at the Qatar GP, where Verstappen accused Russell of being a “backstabber,” and Russell fired back, calling Verstappen a “bully.” Horner’s initial comments about Russell being “hysterical” prompted Wolff to label him a “yapping little terrier.”
Horner’s Response
Taking the humorous route, Horner leaned into the metaphor during Friday’s Team Representative Press Conference:
“Well, look, I love terriers. I think they’re great dogs, and I’ve had four of them,” Horner quipped. “They’re tremendously loyal and not afraid of going after bigger dogs. I’d rather be a terrier than a wolf, maybe.”
Horner also shared anecdotes about his terriers, humorously named Bernie and Flavio, aligning their feisty and easygoing personalities with his approach to team management.
Horner on Wolff’s Leadership and Russell Drama
While Horner kept the humor flowing, he didn’t shy away from addressing Wolff’s broader critique:
“I think Toto loves to hate me. But honestly, shouldn’t he be more focused on celebrating Lewis [Hamilton’s] final race with Mercedes rather than stirring the pot?”
As for Wolff’s comments that Horner is “weak” for not standing up to Verstappen, Horner chose to focus on results:
“We’ve won 122 races and 14 world championships. I think we’re doing all right. Everyone manages their team differently.”
Horner also doubled down on his support for Verstappen, declaring:
“Max does nothing but tell the truth. I believe 100% what he said to be accurate.”
What’s Next?
With the Constructors’ Championship wrapped up by McLaren or Ferrari and Hamilton bidding farewell to Mercedes, the tension between Red Bull and Mercedes looks unlikely to simmer down anytime soon. Horner and Wolff’s war of words only adds fuel to the fire of an already competitive F1 paddock.
Stay tuned as F1’s fiercest rivalry continues both on and off the track!
