The Portuguese MotoGP will indeed take place towards the end of the 2025 season, changing its usual date from the last few years – in March or April.

Although there is no concrete calendar yet, it is known that Portimão will host one of the final rounds of the next season, as confirmed by Jaime Costa, the CEO of the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve:

– It is an unprecedented contract, it is a guarantee of stability for two years, which is very important for us, and it is also Dorna’s recognition of our credibility and that we are able to host a MotoGP race here with unique characteristics. Now we have to work. We have a year to work until the next race, which will be one of the last races on the calendar.

The Portuguese GP organizers will, therefore, have almost a full year to work on the event’s organization and promotion, unlike what has been usual. There is also the unprecedented stability of knowing that the event will remain on the calendar for at least two more seasons.

Although the Portuguese GP has normally been held in April since 2021, it returned to the calendar in 2020 as a contingency solution due to the pandemic, and at that time, it closed the season in November. The following year, Portimão also hosted a second round, the Algarve GP, in November (after the Portuguese GP took place in April).

What is known about the 2025 calendar?

Although the provisional or final calendar for the 2025 MotoGP season has not yet been announced, some details about the schedule are already confirmed.

The season will kick off from February 28 to March 2 with the Thai GP in Buriram. The French GP will take place from May 9 to 11, two weeks before the British GP from May 23 to 25. The German GP is planned for July 11 to 13, followed by the Austrian GP from August 15 to 17 and the Hungarian GP from August 22 to 24.

Since the Portuguese GP is expected to be one of the last of the season, it would make sense to place it in November, around the same time as the Valencia GP, to minimize travel within the Iberian Peninsula after the Asian leg of the championship.
