Since 2016, the GP of the Americas in Austin has been the only one on the MotoGP calendar, when not many years before there used to be three. And in the future, Dorna wants to have two rounds in the country again, as highlighted by its CEO, Carmelo Ezpeleta.
In statements quoted by GPOne.com, the Spaniard explained that it is important to involve the American market with motorcycles: ‘Americans must get in touch with motorcycles and this should be our mission, because going to Austin for one year and then disappearing, having only one race, is not enough. We saw what Formula 1 did, for example, and I think that is the right path. In recent years, the World Championship has had many American winners and, in my opinion, we can rediscover those values‘.
The subject is being worked on and Ezpeleta made it clear that he does not want to have two GPs in the USA just for the sake of it: ‘We are thinking and evaluating. I would like to have two successful races, with a great attraction, where we can attract a large number of fans, without having to combine two weekends. I believe that two races in the United States would be fantastic. The problem is that, at the moment, we only have Austin as an available track‘.
