Madrid Plunged into Darkness: Jack Draper Embraces Blackout to Disconnect from Chaos

A massive power outage plunged Madrid and parts of Spain and Portugal into chaos, leading to the suspension of matches at the prestigious Madrid Open, including the showdown between Jack Draper and Matteo Berrettini. Amid the turmoil, the British No. 1 found solace in the darkness, embracing the rare opportunity to disconnect from the digital world.

Following the unexpected blackout that disrupted the tournament, organizers scrambled to reschedule matches, setting up a jam-packed schedule for the following day to ensure the event’s continuity. Despite the uncertainty looming over the return of power, players like Draper made the most of the situation.

In a post-match interview after defeating Berrettini, who retired during a tight first set, Draper revealed his unconventional approach to the blackout. “I was actually enjoying it. I’m a bit of a minimalist. Everyone’s panicking, (but) it was so nice to have no phones and none of that other bulls**t going on in the world,” expressed Draper. The blackout provided him with a unique opportunity to delve into reading, a rare activity for the athlete. “I ended up reading 4 pages of a book—no, actually 10 pages. Usually I don’t read at all, so it was interesting.”

Draper’s journey at the Madrid Open continues as he advances to the Round of 16, where he is set to face off against the 11th seed, Tommy Paul. Paul secured his spot in the next round after a hard-fought victory against Karen Khachanov.

As the tournament progresses amidst unforeseen challenges, Draper’s resilience and adaptability amidst the chaos showcase the true spirit of a champion. Stay tuned for more electrifying updates from the Madrid Open as the world’s best tennis players battle it out on the court.
