Miguel Oliveira returned to MotoGP action at the French GP about two weeks ago, after nearly two months sidelined due to injury. He had to regain pace, and the results weren’t impressive… until Sunday’s race.

With rain hitting Le Mans, the Prima Pramac Yamaha rider made the right tyre choice at the right time and found himself running in second place. Points were within reach, but a late crash forced him to retire.

In an interview with Estrella Galicia 0,0, Oliveira reflected on his comeback: ‘My return at Le Mans was, from a physical standpoint, a challenge in every way. Being off the MotoGP pace, being off a bike for two months, and returning to competition at the incredibly high MotoGP pace was tough’.

As for the second place he momentarily held during the race, the Portuguese rider admitted he didn’t realize his position right away: ‘For me, it was quite exciting, even though I was well aware that it was a race under very particular conditions and a big opportunity to score points. Honestly, I only realized I was in second when [Marc] Márquez passed me. That’s when I understood I had a chance to bring some good points back to the box’.

Despite the rather unfortunate end, Oliveira left the French round in good spirits: ‘It was a Grand Prix in which I gained a lot of experience. That made me happy, and just being back racing over the weekend was a victory in itself’.
